Ceramic Braces: Are They Right For You?
If you have concerns about your smile – because your teeth aren’t as straight as you’d like, they’re overly crowded, or they’re not aligned properly – ceramic braces could be the answer. They’re best suited for people who need mild to moderate adjustments. Those with severe misalignments or crowding may require traditional metal braces.
Ceramic Braces vs. Metal Braces
Because ceramic ones are pretty much the same color as your natural teeth, they’re less visible than metal ones.
As you may have guessed, they’re typically made of ceramic, although sometimes porcelain is used. Similarly to metal braces, they consist of a bracket which is glued to the tooth with a special dental cement, wire to connect the brackets, and tiny elastics to hold the wires onto the brackets. Many people choose clear elastics, to further minimize the appearance of their braces.
Due to the light color of the brackets, they can stain more easily than metal ones. Clear elastics are also more vulnerable to staining than darker colored ones. However, with proper care, most patients find it simple to keep them looking their best.
How to keep your braces looking great
The key to nice-looking braces is to avoid getting them stained. Every time you eat, brush your teeth afterwards. Floss regularly – ideally after every single meal. Finish by rinsing with mouthwash.
Avoid smoking. It’s also a good idea to minimize or avoid your consumption of high-stain foods such as dark or colored soda, coffee, and red wine. Foods that noticeably stain your tongue can also stain your braces.
Lastly, see your orthodontist at regular intervals so they can change your elastics when needed.
